Precision Through Telemetry

In motorsport, milliseconds matter. At Revolve NTNU, one of the most powerful tools we have isn’t just our electric drivetrain or carbon fiber monocoque, it’s the ability to understand the car while it's running. That’s where telemetry comes in. And thanks to our long-standing collaboration with Radionor Communications, we’re not just keeping up, we’re setting the standard.

Radionor is a Trondheim-based company developing next-generation tactical broadband data links using phased array antennas - technology typically used in defense and aerospace industries. Their Cordis Array radios deliver unmatched range, bandwidth, and stability, making them ideal for high-mobility environments. In other words: perfect for a Formula Student racecar.

With their support, our cars are equipped with a radio unit that transmits real-time data from the car to a base station in the pit lane. This link allows us to monitor over 300 sensors throughout the vehicle, ranging from motor temperature and velocity to suspension movement and brake pedal position.

Unlike Wi-Fi or standard consumer-grade communication systems, Radionor’s tech allows us to transmit large volumes of data across the racetrack without dropouts or interference. That means we can push harder, fine-tune in real time, and catch issues before they turn into failures.

Our telemetry setup operates on an IP-based link, allowing multiple engineers at trackside to visualize live data from the car during test sessions. Using our in-house software tool, Analyze, we can overlay signals, spot patterns, and make informed decisions, all while the car is still on track.

This is invaluable when it comes to adjusting parameters on the fly. From calibrating motor controllers to monitoring driver inputs, telemetry helps us tune performance efficiently. After the session, we dive deeper into the recorded data to optimize everything from aerodynamics to energy usage.

Having a telemetry system we can trust - one that won’t falter under pressure - gives us a clear competitive edge. It reduces risk, saves time, and enables smarter, faster decisions both on and off the track. As we gear up for a new season of racing and testing, we’re proud to continue our collaboration with Radionor. Together, we’re proving that precision data isn't just a tool, it's a game-changer.
