Revolve NTNU as top 2
at the Red Bull Ring in Austria

Faster, lighter and smarter than ever. The student team as top two on their first race of the year.

By Erik Brettingen Johansen

The Formula Student team Revolve NTNU scored second overall in Red Bull Ring, Austria with their electrical car Nova. This is part of the biggest engineering competition in the world, with big opponents like TU München, TU Graz and ETH Zurich. From the 58 international teams and about 1500 students that showed up, half of them competed in the electrical class.

Amongst the trophies gained, the students scored first on the Engineering Design event. A competition that tests the student’s knowledge, and where they have to defend every design choice made on the car in front of judges that are top engineers from the automotive industry.

Nova goes from 0 to 100 km/h in just about 2 seconds. It also weighs only 162 kg and a top speed of more than 120 km/h. Highlights of the year include self-developed motors and inverter to reduce weight and increase power. The students get valuable job experience, and several have already been recruited by Formula 1 racing teams like Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing.

Formula Student is an annual engineering design competition that is held in several countries around the world. The task is to build and compete with a race car. Both the design and construction have to be of top quality to get through strict quality inspections. Revolve NTNU competes both in the electrical class and the driverless class.

The team is now traveling to Germany, which will be the last competition for the season. There, the driverless and electric cars will meet up, as the driverless car competed in Hungary two weeks ago.

“It is nothing but a huge team effort! It shows that the hard and smart work has really paid off. I am proud, both of the team members, but also the sponsors that make this possible. A special thanks to our main sponsors Kongsberg Gruppen and Bertel O. Steen.” – Karoline Halvorsen, Project Manager
